When I went to Artistic you could miss one Saturday a month. If you missed 2 you where suspended for 3 days. Students know the rules going in. If you don't like it, don't sign up. I don't see how they could make someone do 20 hrs make up time for a missed Saturday. It's a 1500 hr course. Don't be there unless you are clocked in, make sure that the instructor hasn't clocked you out and keep a copy of all your work and tests. Some shady things have gone on there in the past.

I know there are some hairdressers that work really hard and have successful businesses; however, I also know that a lot of these young girls that go to beauty school are just dumb little clucks that think it sounds glamourous, when in real life they are too dumb to do anything else or don't have the ambition to do anything else. It is just like an internship. You work for free while gaining experience. I loved my college internship so much it turned into an 8 year job.

By a very successful businessman, I was told, I would learn more in my first year of work than I would in four years of college, and to dig, make contacts and take on all the workload I could. He was right. My point being, the value of experience is priceless.
I am certain, you are a disgruntled student who doesn't want to work hard. Sure, everyone has families, but how will you expect to provide for them? If you've been having your hair done at this school this long, you haven't just noticed this.
You need to buck up

When I went to college I was not paid. I studied for long hard hours and received a degree. I had to pay for tuition. Books. Paper pencils.etc. I must have misunderstood why I was there was to get paid.

I read Lissy73's post the complete opposite way. I read it to mean she was calling the OP an idiot.
Now I'm confused, but what else is new...?

Wow...you are calling us idiots? If they didn't allow the students to get real world experience, how valuable do you think that piece of paper would be? Morons like you who don't know the difference between education and learning are the real idiots. The ones who pay full boat for these courses realize the value of the experience and are the first in line when a customer walks in. Some of the ones on financial aid are the ones who have attitudes like you and cherry pick the customers, and feel like THEY are being used for free labor .

It's a SCHOOL. Not free labor. It's meant for LEARNING and EXPERIENCE. Idiots, USE YOUR BRAIN.

It's similar to when I done my clinicals in the medical field. I worked my butt off but didn't get paid. The experience is more valuable during that time!

I agree 100%. Any job that demands employees work more than 40 hrs. is really slavery in disguise and in direct conflict with the constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness. I am a devout Seventh Day Adventist on Saturday and a Fundamentalist Amish Mennonite Sunday thru Friday.

It's a school , I've had them do a wonderful job on my hair. They know they won't be paid, but if they pass, they can be licensed by the state. Some students are more talented and devoted than others of course. Some spend the day griping and complaining, others work hard and keep to the study plan.

There is such a thing as the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Arts....there are guidelines in which each student must follow, up to and including hours.
Not only is this a place of business it is also a state licensed school...so no, these students do not get paid...and it shouldn't be necessary either! Tipping is great thing to do if a client appreciates the service that is rendered.

Why should be paid? Tips are fine, but an elective gratuity to be bestowed by the customer. Who, by the way is providing a training opportunity and accepting some inherent risk. If they were not firm on their attendance policy, guess which is the day to most likely have students call out? And guess which day is there busiest?
