I strongly believe in keeping your pets in a fenced in yard - mainly for their protection. We have a 6' privacy fence in our back yard that we let our dogs run and exercise in without us having to worry about them. We have small housedogs that only go outdoors to play and potty. Even though your neighbor sounds like a grouchy ole goat that thrives on conflict I would not give him the satisfaction of even acknowledging his grud comments. I, personally could not hurt his cats because I am a cat lover too. It is a cats nature and instinct to roam in barns, etc to look for mice. I know a fence will not keep his cats out of your yard but your dogs can always chase them out and it brings them little fellas such great pleasure!! Good Luck!!

skitterjoe they would remind you of the devil.
Cats mean no harm to people, they are very loving. Not always treated right. As for the owner not keeping them up, that is just ignorance on their part.

I would stay clear of this looney neighbor. Anybody that would shoot a dog would not be too far from stepping over the line to shoot a human.

Having a fenced yard is very necessary. It not only protects your dog from getting picked up, fighting with other animals, or maybe even biting someone, it keeps other animals, people, and cars from hurting it. We have 2 dogs and our yard is fenced in, it shows responsibility on your part as the owner and it means you want to protect your pet from any danger. I hope you can work things out with your neighbor, if your dogs are small I suggest keeping them inside and when they do go out, you go out with them and monitor their activity outside until you can get a fence or underground fence installed. Good luck and take care of these "babies", dont let that neighbor hurt them.

also check this type of fence out before doing a buried fence. but remember just like a buried fence this only protects others from your dogs. it doesn't protect your dogs from others.

i called a rescue to inquire about adopting a dog the other day. the dog i am trying to adopt has sight/hearing issues so he would never be outside without me there. even so, sight/hearing problems or not, one of their requirements is a fenced yard. their logic is that it's not only to keep the animal contained it is to act as a further barrier to another animal or person that might want to do the adoptive dog harm.

makes sense to me. you kind of have to ask yourself what this thread is really about?

is it about....
1.what you should do about your neighbor?
2.what you shouldn't have to do because you live in the country?
or...
3.what is best for your dogs to insure their safety from as much harm as possible?

Cotton did you have your fence put in or do it yourself? I a 50x50 lot that will not hold a small dog so maybe an underground system will be my answer

I to have my 2 beagles in a lot, and this summer we are going to fence in our back yard to give them more running room. They are not hunting dogs. I don't guess. They have never been. But when we get them out there noses goes crazy. I love my beagles.

If I was in your shoes I would go buy one of those underground electric fences and put the collars on your dogs to keep them on your property if they are getting on his...then go knock on the neighbors door and tell him what you did and that you're keeping your dogs on your property and he needs to keep his cats on his property or you will shoot them. that's just what I would do...that way he has no excuse to kill your dogs..because they are on your property.
