I mean let looks at today people. Mommy and daddy buy everything, old tradition mommy and daddy said get the **** off your *** and work for it or else you go without. In the mommy and daddy will give to much and still not be grateful.Oh wait I take the back it's already happening cause they scream MORE!MORE!MORE! ****it.

Picked blackberries and sold them door to door as a young teen. Earlier we had chores at home like picking beans, sawing wood, stacking wood for the wood stove, going to the spring for water, shucking corn, shellling beans, picking strawberries. We ate a lot of pinto beans, cornbreat and taters but it was good. .

Young people today don't have any idea what it is to have to earn anything. Our kids( in their 30's now) went to work at 16 & earned what they wanted. Their dad & I did so they did. You appreciate things more when you work for them.

Did yard chores for neighbors! I remember one old lady, me and my sis washed her dishes, cleaned her cats litter box, swept and we were so excited when we were done, so we would get paid and she gave me and my sis a nickel each, lol.

I think some are just pampered to much. I have tried to train kids fresh out of high school on my job and they look at you like you want me to do that. It's like common since is not so common any more.

Late 30's... Growing up, my dad made sure I had what I needed, but if I wanted something (name brand clothes or shoes, make-up...anything extra), I had to work for it. Chores around the house didn't count, those were expected in exchange for the privilege of living there :)

I'm 33. I've always worked. I've had a job since I was old enough to have one.

Same here - early forties, but been working since I was 14. My kids work, too, so it's not a generational thing.

I can't help but to notice there are not any young people on here. Most of what I see sounds like around the 50s and 60s . I don't think you will find too many 20 and 30 year olds that had to work for anything. What does that tell you?

heck I always had chores.

allowance wasn't something we had.

I remember churning butter and milking cows, working in the garden when I was so little I used a lard bucket to pick stuff in

clothes were homemade

no money, but had plenty to eat, roof over my head and a whole lotta love with the hickory switch. We raised our own garden, our own meat, pick up hay in the fields, hoed corn while grandpaw plowed with the horse. Picked up several acres of potatoes, again daddy or grandpaw plowed them out with the horse. And we played as hard as we worked. My first job was at Ithaca at the age of 16, went to school in the morning and worked 8 hours at night. Still graduated from high school. After I started working I paid my own way, that included giving daddy and momma money to help out at home.

Mowed neighbors yard with one of those old blade mowers that u just pushed. No engine! Helped put up hay when I could hardly drag a bale to the truck or trailer. I picked up those bottles too. I got a real education working in tobacco. I learned to cuss with one of those hand held setters that u carried water to and then the **** handle would stick and lose all the water. I started paying taxes with a work permit when I was old enough . Always had to pay for my things including first car ,insurance , etc.

Babysat. There were tons of little kids in my neighborhood. I remember doing it as young as ten during the day and twelve after dark. It's interesting how now, that would never happen. When I got old enough (14 maybe?), I detasseled corn. That was hard, sucky work.

Mom & Dad didn't have any extra money to give us an allowance. Sometimes we would wash grandma's canning jars for a quarter (boxes & boxes of them!) or we'd clean her kitchen for fifty cents. That was back in the old days!!

Chores. I got an allowance for doing them.

I got a job as soon as I was old enough. My first job was waitressing. I was good at it too.
