There are no riflings in the barrel of a .410 shotgun = dick Cheney load. Ruger 10/22 is my favorite varmit rifle. Wanna send 'em to Heaven? AK-47.

i wouldnt shoot a 45 in a .410 but i do know a guy that used a .410 loaded with a .41 long colt to shoot wild boar at close range you might want to check with a gunsmith like AC Burgess up on cactus lane off 421 he could probably give you the best answer and i am more partial to a Ruger M77 chambered in a .270 for open fields and my Marlin lever action chambered in .44 mag for close thickets you can also get the marlin chambered in .45 long colt , .357 mag , 30-30 , 35 rem, 444 rem , 45-70, 450 and many more, good luck

My 19 year old son told his Dad this evening that for years he thought he was not a good shot because his Dad was the only person that he had to compare himself to. Dad and son are both excellent marksmen, but Dad is still the best.

My oldest son bought Taurus Public Defender. Like SMK I was not impressed with it past 30 feet or so. But for some one who lives in a apartment or trailer and needs a self defense gun it would be a dandy. The #4 or #6 shot will not penetrate thru most walls so you don't have to worry about hitting your neighbors or a family member on another room. As with any other firearm its a compromise,you are giving up distance and precision in favor of massive point blank stopping power. But for inside the house use it would really shine in my humble opinion.

NC Citizen, I noticed on the link you posted that they have 22 LR plastic cased rounds. I have never tried them. (It's been a while since I shot any and last time I did the 22LR were all brass). I may have to try them in a rifle or auto pistol just to see.

The CCI shot shells work well enough for extremely close range (I would honestly say up to 12 yards like the Judge.) The revolver rounds work fine. The auto rounds have feeding and extraction problems in most handguns. The 22 rounds because they are brass cased and not plastic cased nearly never extract automatically and I have found even in bolt guns the extractor just won't grab them to pull them out because they expand so tightly in the chamber and require a small screw driver or other tool to remove them. In revolvers they all seem to work fine. For small game hunting, I can honestly shoot a squirrel at two to three times the distance with my Ruger MKII or MkIII. For snakes, again in my opinion if you are close enough to kill it with a shot shell you can kill it with a pistol round, but if you like the idea of shot gun pellets for snake dispatching the CCI rounds do work just fine in a revolver.

Not to mention, that shotshells are available for a number of standard handgun calibers...like CCI. http://www.thegunsource.com...
I've not studied or shot these rounds, perhaps SMK can comment on these options, compared to the specialty combo guns.

PS: an interesting bit of trivia. The reason the Judge is not considered a short barrel shot gun and banned by the BATF is that it has a rifled bore and is originally manufactured in pistol configuration.

My father in law is a fan of the Taurus Judge revolver. I am not. He has a dozen of them in different barrel lengths, chamber lengths, weights and finishes. I have shot each one. While certainly quite pleasant to shoot, the do no fill my vision of what a handgun should be. I like a bit of accuracy in my guns.
Twelve yards was maximum distance. I shot 000 buck and #2bird as well as 45 Colts through the guns. I could hit well enough with 45's but that really isn't the purpose of the guns. At close range (5 to 15 feet) three 000's stayed within a fist sized group. At exactly 12 yards the three 000 pellets would span a IDPA target. About half the time they would be exactly horizontal (left chest mid chest and right chest.) And half the time they would be perfectly vertical (groin, heart and head). Go figure. The number 2's just peppered the target at that range. In my opinion not the best self defense tool and bystanders are probably at more risk. Increased probability of hitting someone out your car window while trying to drive away? Probably. Each to his own I guess. Some people in vision dangers of needing instant protection against snakes and such. I guess that would do, but I never had much problem killing dangerous snakes anyway.
Having said this, DO NOT shoot a 45 Colt (also wrongly known as 45 Long Colt) in a regular 410 shotgun. Guns that have been chambered for both have a 45 Colt chamber and are overbored for the 410 to make it safe. 410 shot guns are not bored for 45. The standard bore diameter of a 410 is 0.410 inches in diameter with constriction down to @0.375 inch if your gun has a full choke. The 45 colt is 0.451-.454 inches in diameter. You will likely destroy your gun and quite possibly lose a body part or two.
You will know if you gun is chambered for both as it will have been advertised as a combo gun and or will be marked 45/410 on the chamber.
Pick a round for hunting? Really I just pick a gun I want to hunt with. It is just however I feel that day, but I would say it is usually a 30 caliber. 308 or 30-06.

A .45 long colt will chamber perfectly in a standard .410 shotgun. However, the problem that you run into is that most .410 shotguns are choked down to at least a modified or full choke to compensate for the lack of lead pellets in the smaller shell. The .45 long colt would not fire freely down the barrel due to the .452 bullet diameter and the bore of the shotgun being choked down. Therefore, you would more than likely destroy the barrel and could even be injured in the process. Even if you did have a .410 that wasn't choked down or that had a removable choke, the accuracy of the .45 long colt wouldn't be worth the risk because of the smooth bore of the shotgun. It takes about a 1 in 12 twist per inch rifling, like that in the Taurus Judge, to stabilize the bullet. With a smooth bore that has no rifling, the bullet could even hit the target sideways if it hit at all. Better either get you New England Survivor, Judge, or Snake Charmer Derringer since they are designed to shoot both or just send a request to mythbusters and let them destroy a gun. Hope this helps!

The Tauras Judge is a revlover, and it will allow the firing of both a 45 Long Colt, and a 410 shotgun shell from the same cylinder. You can stagger the rounds if you want and have your first shot as a 410, and the second as a 45 Long Colt, and so on if you choose, or simply load each round in your choice.
I am unsure if a 45 Long Colt round would function properly in a 410 single shot shotgun not designed for it.
