I use advantage for my mastiff. I would not use anything else. I don't have to worry about other bugs, ticks, mites, etc etc etc.

As for the over the counter, that you can get at any store, I have heard too many people losing their pets with Hartz, and some other brand.

If you want to try to go organic, you can add brewer's yeast and garlic to their food. It does not always work for every dog, and some dogs will have a bad reaction to the garlic. Google for right dosage, and be sure the site you are getting it from is a good site.

If anyone has had a problem using the Hartz / Sergeants products please use the consumer affairs website to report what happened to your pet. They have recently petitioned the EPA to open an investigation because over 44,000 complaints have been issued. Death has even been reported with use of these products.

Hopefully if enough people report it they will eventually remove it from the shelves.

Skitterjoe is right. I washed my Toy Poodle yesterday (Friday) got her dried and brushed the used Seargents Flea and Tick control on the base of her neck. Within a hour she was coughing and throwing up. I called the number on the box after I called the vet. They said she was in the first stages of over dosing even though I used the product for her weight. They told me to get her in the bath with Dawn and get the rest of their product off her. I did and force fed her water till midnight last night. Thank God she is doing just fine today.

this really does work. if you ar egiving your animal a bath, try not to get the dish detergent in his eyes. my mom taught me this trick when i took a puppy home from her house. we gave the puppy a bath with dawn dish detergent and literally by the time i rinsed her off, the fleas were dead....every last one of them.

oh...ok....lol..I don't really want to use seven dust..cause 1 I'm pregnant...and 2 I have a 2 year old. but yes, my step dad would dust the dogs in seven dust and it never hurt them, and he would dust his chicken in seven dust when they got mites and it never hurt them

BE CAREFUL!!!! ABOUT USING THAT STUFF FROM WALMART. I USED IT ON OUR SMALL DOG. WITHIN A HOUR SHE WAS HAVE SOME SORT OF A SEIZURE. AND SHE DID NOT LICK IT EITHER. CALLED THE EMERENGY VET IN W. SALEM, THEY TOLD ME TO BATH HER IN "DAWN" AND TO WATCH HER CLOSELY. SHE WAS FINE WITHIN A HOUR OR SO. IF GOING TO USE A FLEA TREATMENT, I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GET IT FROM YOUR VET. IT IS COSTLY, BUT WELL WORTH IT.

Bean Dust kills fleas too, we used to powder our outside dog every summer when I was growing up. Also kills ticks.

DAY 3- STILL DEAD

ok...so I tihnk it is safe to say that the Dawn Dish Detergent Kills Fleas OR they were paralized enough to where they will never move again and die of starvation..either way..those suckers are D-E-A-D

the dish detergent will make their skin dry out if you use it to much, just as about any shampoo will. it is not good for any dog to have a bath a lot. you are really only suppose to give a dog a bath like once every other week. but a few times to kill fleas does not hurt them at all.

anyway...

DAY 2- FLEAS STILL APPEAR DEADER THAN A DOOR NAIL

Its looks to me like the dish detg. would dry the animals skin very badly.. and make them scatch like they had fleas..with all the harsh chemicals in it to remove oils.. It would remove all the oil from the animals coats and it would be very unconfortable itchy and dull coat..

You can get good stuff at Wal-Mart. I worked with a vet long ago and we used Adams Flea Shampoo. It works very well and is sold at Wal-Mart. A bottle is about 10 dollars

havent read all the post here, but i found something great that works on my sweet dog, from the internet.it was a scientific site and it said to take half a box of epson salt, and in a gallon milk jug mix just a little warm water to disolve it,then pour a bottle of peroxide into it and shake.pour this onto the dog or cat,do not rinse off.their coat will be very soft from this and you will not have the flea problems.its worked wonders at our home.you can do this at least once a week but i have not had to do this but once a month.
