Can your tubes come untied?

When I was pregnant with my youngest daughter (she's 15 now) a lady that went to the same dr as me was pregnant and her tubes were tied 8 or 10 years earlier and she hadn't had it reversed.

Talk about shocked!! She had her baby right around the same time as I did.

My OBGYN did the filshie clip procedure for mine and told me there was a 50% chance that after 5 yrs I could become pregnant again and that no tubal was really 100% totally safe. The only 100% safe alternative is to not have sex!

do you know of anyone who has become pregnant using the filshie clip procedure?

It happened to my dil. She had tubal ligation after second child was born in 2005. Two years ago, she had a miscarriage, which was a total surprise.

If you are going to have a tubal ligation, be sure that they remove a large portion of the fallopian tubes so that there is no possibility to reconnect.

THat depends. There are several here that say tubals are cut & tie...but that isn't so. Some doctor's use filshie clips. They have a low failure rate and do less damage to the fallopian tubes. The failure rate is 2-3 per 1000 of the procedure done, so that is way less than 1%.

Oh, can they come untied?

No. Nowadays the are cut. fairly far appart. theoretically can it reheal and recanalize a new tube? Anything is possible, but very unlikely. More than likely would be the obstitrican cut something that he thought was the tube and it wasn't. Heck a woman may even have more than one tube on each side (very unusual but possible) and the surgeon not cut both.

Mine is permanant- unless I grow more tubes. He removed 95% of them. Which I'm blessed with 2 wonderful children. And who knows, we can look at adopting someday...Lord knows theres little ones out there that need good families!

It can indeed happen. My OBGY told me that your body constantly tries to heal itself and considers that an injury/wound. However there are two methods. One is the snip and burn - they can grow back together that way easier. The other method is actually removing a section of the tube. That is much more difficult (i.e. nearly impossible) to reconnect.

My aunt got pregnant 7 years after her tubes were tied. BIG SHOCK. But this was like 15 years ago. So, you do have a chance- be it slim I'm sure.
I wouldn't do it until you know your completely finished with the babies. I had it done after # 2 and now I regret it.

i'm not thinking about having it done.... i was just curious if it had happened to anyone.

Yes, but there are no gauruntees and it is very expensive and no insurance or government program will pay for it to be done. If you are thinking you may want additional kids, do not get a tubal ligation.
