thats not true you can fly with your firearm if it is packed in your luggage in a approved TSA case and you declair it.

What about the brass case that the ammo is made of do you think that will pass a detector also.

Along with the firing pin, they have to install a metal plate to have enough metal to set off a metal detector. And to make it legal. Without that metal plate (which can be removed) from what I've read it makes it seem that just the firing pin wouldn't be enough to set off most detectors.

Plastic fantastic.

I can manufacture a better working gun out of random metal parts found in my gargage.

Desktop models can be had for around $1300 now (the Cube from 3D systems) for monochrome. From videos I've watched, there are still some bugs to work out on the gun printing and materials used, as they don't last for very many firings. A guy in Austin is printing the restricted parts of the AR-15, but using the stock items you can buy without hassle, and I think he's made it up to a clips worth before the part fails - might be more - it's been a while since I watched it.

We're getting ready to get our first 3D printer at work. Can't wait to see that puppy in action.

3D printing has been hailed as the future of manufacturing.

The technology works by building up layer upon layer of material - typically plastic - to build complex solid objects.

The idea is that as the printers become cheaper, instead of buying goods from shops, consumers will instead be able to download designs and print out the items at home.

But as with all new technologies, there are risks as well as benefits.

The gun was made on a 3D printer that cost $8,000 (5,140) from the online auction site eBay.

It was assembled from separate printed components made from ABS plastic - only the firing pin was made from metal.

Other than the fact that this thing can pass through metal detectors without being notice, I think this is pretty cool.
