Zombie...i don't speak for amazon, but in my ebay business, i often get asked if i am charging actual shipping, or more. The answer is more.
I explain that my packing materials are not free, neither is the gas i use to carry the items to the shipping station, and we have a part time girl that ships for us too...once in a great while we will take advantage of afree shipping deal that ebay offers and pass that savings on to buyers. Last week, i wrote a check for over 70 bucks for bubble wrap and tape.

If you use Amazon a lot, it's really worth it to enroll in Amazon Prime. Items that are designated as Amazon Prime come with free shipping.
But I know what you mean....many times I will be ready to buy an item only to discover the shipping is as much as the item.

Amazon Prime $79.00 a year... extra streaming tv shows/movies an free shipping on most stuff... well a lot of stuff . my tv came with a free trial you might find one online
