I would like to say that golf courses are certainly the worst offenders.

I do agree with that.

Yes. But it's spread out over large areas.

Not a concentrated tractor trailer load of poo.

Cows, Deers, Horses and all kinds of animals poop in creeks and rivers all the time , part of nature.

The fish drink directly from the water. People eat the fish.
Ecosystem. Look it up.

Think about it Burger, they also procreate in the water. :)

Papa. The fish drink directly from the water. People eat the fish.

Ecosystem. Look it up.

Also. This guy wasn't a traditional farmer. He was a wealthy business man tying up wealth in his "farms".

Tax haven Farms I think he called it.

It's always the farmer getting blamed but how many golf courses in America pollute streams with chemicals and fertilizer?

I am saying people do not drink direct from that river. I think you are being overdramtic. One cow infecting the entire nation. I do not condone what the farmer did, however lets don' t blow this out of proportion.

That's what I was thinking joseph t.....composted cow manure is one of the best fertilizers on the planet....that's stupid to just throw it away

There is no mad cow disease in the USA. Also do you think people actually drink direct from the river? The two cases of mad cow in this country in the last few years were cows from Canada brought here for slaughter.

That's why I said like Mad Cow Disease. All it takes is one cow to be infected, then spread the manure in a river, and you'll quickly have an entire nation that's infected.

Are you seriously arguing that it's not a big deal that the river has 123 times the acceptable limit of fecal coliform?

I bet people eat fish out of it everyday.

What I don't understand is why he wasn't spraying it on his hay fields as fertilizer?

I agree that he should not have dumped the manure and should be punished. However the statement, how many people have been drinking raw cow manure is dumb. The water that goes through a water filtration plant removes the impurities. If it did not, think of all the run off that gets into streams from not just farming. The dead fish, animals that in the stream and naturally occuring manure.

You're forgetting about all of the people that drink well water. And, this river is used regularly for swimming and kayaking, etc; I'm sure a lot of people just drink it straight from the source, confident that it's safe.

According to the EPA, an acceptable level of fecal coliform is 800 parts per million. But at the dumping site, this river had up to 99,000 parts per million! Even downstream, it was 2,200 parts per million.

And since we're talking about untreated cow manure, how many diseases were potentially released in to the river (like Mad Cow Disease), eventually being spread to people and wildlife?
