They're lucky they didn't kill somebody. Something that can cut a tree in half could certainly kill somebody. I wonder why there were no names? Either way they are likely facing a long stay in prison.

Wilkes Sheriff's Department investigators believe a legal product used in an illegal way caused an explosion that shook houses and left a dark cloud of smoke in Moravian Falls early Saturday night, said Chief Deputy Doug Cotton.
Cotton said an explosive called Tannerite, a trademarked name, was detonated shortly before 8 p.m. in the area near where Germantown Road crosses Moravian Creek. He said it's legal to use the product if done in accordance with directions on each Tannerite package.
"If you mix up more of it together than is contained in one package, that is a violation of federal law" because it makes a more powerful explosive, said Cotton. "If you confine it (Tannerite) by putting it in something and then detonating it, that is also committing a crime.
He noted that one package of Tannerite creates an explosion equal to that from a little less than one stick of dynamite.
Suspects in the case in Moravian Falls combined multiple packages of Tannerite, "plus they confined it in an old dryer, which made a huge bomb," said Cotton.
The explosion propelled pieces of metal from the old dryer between 100 and 120 yards and cut trees in half, he said.
Cotton said innocent bystanders and the suspects easily could have been seriously injured or killed.
He said investigators plan to meet with representatives of the district attorney's office in the county courthouse to discuss possible charges in the case.
The Wilkes Communications Center received five calls about the explosion, including some who said it shook their houses and one woman who said her home was enveloped in smoke. A resident of Moravian-Kilby Road, at least a mile from where the explosion occurred, said it shook houses there.
Tannerite is most often detonated when hit by bullets from high caliber firearms, either to show that a target was hit from a long distance or for the experience of causing an explosion.
It's a trademarked product sold at sporting goods stores and elsewhere and often used for stunts in movies and TV shows, said Cotton.
Tannerite is a binary explosive, which he said means it consists of two separate components which aren't explosive unless they're mixed together.
The two components for Tannerite are ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, which aren't mixed when purchased in retail packages. Ammonium nitrate, which is fertilizer, is the oxydizer. Aluminum powder is the fuel.
Cotton said the sheriff's department has received numerous calls from people about explosions recently and that most are believed to have resulted from Tannerite.
Cotton is president of the N.C. Bomb Squad Commanders Association and said the increasing use of Tannerite and how it should be regulated will be discussed when the association meets today in Greensboro.
Cotton said the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Explosives plans to classify it, which he said could result in a federal permit being required to possess Tannerite.

it's just a matter of time before it gets pulled off the market.

That will be hard since it is two common materials that can be bought almost anywhere even at Wal-Mart.

Wilkes Explosion Investigation
3WC NEWS

The Wilkes County 911 Communication Center received numerous reports on Saturday of a loud explosion off the Germantown Road in Moravian Falls. Wilkes Sheriff's Deputies arrived to a wooded area where residents reported hearing the explosion. The explosive site was located down in the woods. There appeared to be some type of home appliance at the scene that had been detonated. There was no other information on what kind of explosive device was used, and the investigation is still underway. No injuries were reported.

While it is legal to buy and use as intended, placing it inside of a container and detonating creates a weapon of mass destruction. Ergo, use as intended and dont get it banned for the rest of us

If all the meth labs exploded that gowilkes posters claim, Wilkes County would be under a state of emergency and the ER would have a code black.

It was likely tannerite, youtube it, educate yourself. It is legal, but there are ways that it can be set off that are not. If it is placed inside a container it is considered a weapon of mass destruction, per the instructions that come with it.
