Even the author of the amendment voted against the bill.

Why did the Democrats vote against it?

Back to the bill:
I had read the bill wasn't going to pass before the gay amendment was added anyway. The cost was just too expensive for many conservatives.

While I'm not necessarily disagreeing, there's something to be said for folks who know how the Senate (and the House) work, and who are dedicated to trying to make sure that the institutions in the way they are intended.
I think one major problem in both chambers is a recent influx of individuals who aren't concerned with actually doing the job to which they were elected.

Term limits are the answer.
Two terms max for Congress. One for president. Let em run again after they sit out a term.
While we're at it, make house terms 4 years, senate is good at six. Make the president six as well.
SCOTUS should be limited to ten year terms with one possible reappointment.
A COS could be the start of something good.

I'm assuming they don't want to be one or two termers.

Not an issue after June 7.

They couldn't have it on their records. Someone would use it in a primary.

It might have been smarter to pass the bill and let it be vetoed.

To vote against a bill they were against?
Why did the Gee Oh Pee vote against a bill they were for?
It's in the article, too.

Aren't you glad the democrats had a noble excuse.

Exactly! This was a Gee Oh Pee bill, but the Gee Oh Pee killed it! Why? They didn't want to protect LGBT folks from getting fired for being gay.
Thanks, Sparkling, for highlighting the stupidity of the Republican Party.

Nearly every Democrat voted against it, but that was expected. They'd raised concerns with riders in the bill that would undermine the Clean Water Act and allow people to carry firearms on Corps of Engineers lands. They also opposed language added late Wednesday by Republicans that would prevent the federal government from revoking funds to North Carolina over its controversial law affecting transgender people going to the bathroom.
