The average over all land & ocean surfaces, temperatures warmed 1.5 degrees from 1880 to 2012. I wouldn't start yard selling quilts, sheets, thermal clothing etc.ASAP.
But no, a sudden global warming-induced climate shift could not cause the kind of instant wild weather mayhem depicted in the movie. In this respect, The Day After Tomorrow is science Fiction with a capital "F". The laws of meteorology get seriously abused here. Consider the book the movie is based on, The Coming Global Superstorm, by Whitley Streiber and Art Bell. Whitley Streiber is a UFO expert and author of the best-selling 1985 book Communion, a non-fiction account of his abduction by extra-terrestrials. Art Bell hosts a nationally syndicated all-night radio show, Coast to Coast AM, which specializes in UFOs and the supernatural. They argue that a sudden climate shift would create such strong atmospheric instability that an incredible "superstorm" must result. Powerful clusters of thunderstorms in the Arctic would penetrate deep into the stratosphere, bringing -150°F upper atmospheric air to the surface, flash freezing any living thing caught outside. The clusters of thunderstorms would merge into a continent-sized "superstorm" that would suck energy from the oceans heated by global warming, generating winds of 100-200 mph, blizzard conditions with hundreds of feet of snow, temperature falls in Canada of 100 degrees in an hour, and incredible thunderstorms with huge hail and tornados
Seriously, let the sea levels rise. The beachfront owners now are wealthy and have pushed the po folk back. If sea levels rise, the po folk will become wealthy when they develop their new beachfront property. The major agricultural areas will move north and south depending on hemisphere. Those lands have been largely unused and are fertile. No problems there.
But, alas, there's a study that shows sea levels dropping near NYC and DC. Another study that shows the continent of Australia moving east faster than levels could ever rise, so who is to say that continents don't lift or fall independent of sea level. Greenland would certainly experience uplift with the weight of that ice removed.
As to displaced people, this process will play out over 100-200 years. Where did your ancestors live 200 years ago. Could you say with any certainty where your grandchildren will live in 50 years.
I don't know why everyone's trolling Springy so hard today, but back to the topic.
Watch this time-lapse video that shows the ice melting over the last 27 years. It's really pretty scary to see the damage we've done in such a short period of time:
Maybe as OBLUNDER leaves office he can get a job at WXII as Laney Poops co. Meteorologist.I can hear him now. Uh, well if UH the UH storm continues it's UH UH current path,UH look for massive UH flooding along coastal areas with wind UH UH gust of 85 to UH 75 MPH. Take caution UH if travel is UH needed or UH Uh an emergency. UH now back too UH UH Laney for UH more updates .
Good luck with that, Sparklin', but unless he gives up his physical and mental addictions your efforts will be similar to pissing into the wind. You'll have better results by tugging on Superman's cape or taking the mask off the Lone Ranger.
"The inability to think abstractly can be symptomatic of developmental delays. Children on the autism spectrum frequently struggle with abstract thinking and may have difficulty with empathy and understanding others' emotions. Head injuries and brain damage can also interfere with an individual's ability to grasp abstract thoughts."
I may have been wrong about umpire. For months I have simply thought of him as an *** hole. Instead, he may just be retarded. I want to work toward a more compassionate view of the bass turd. Y'all help me as I try this.
