If their productivity is based on how much their colleagues make in other states, then I think there may be a problem. NC has some excellent teachers. NC also has some teachers that should have chosen another profession. That's the same in any state, any school. Sometimes you just have to teach your child that life is what you make of it and you can receive a quality education regardless of how much their teacher is paid.

Intelligent ,friendly, principals help make happy teachers and students. Happy students want to learn.

Teachers would be happier, and actually have time to teach, without so much paperwork, and some of the stupid meetings they have to attend. Parents also have a big part to play, but some don't care.

One must instill in their children self education.

if you rely on the public school system, and the school system alone to educate your children, i have a message for your kids...

It's hard to be happy when you make less than 90% of the other states. Or at least all of the superior teachers will move.

It's pretty simple reasoning.

Happy teachers are more productive

Then perhaps we should fire unhappy teachers and replace them with happy productive ones?

Happy teachers are more productive. Ignoring some facts again eh Mom?

I want my child to have every possible resource and opportunity to succeed but I do believe change will have to occur in order for that to happen.

Your child's success in school shouldn't be affected by the type of building they attend or how much their teacher makes. Your child's success will be based on how hard they are willing to work and how well they listen and learn. Just my opinion....

I think this area specifically needs more funding, pay increases, actual resources, more teachers, and additional schools. If you want to see something that will upset you, take a thirty minute drive to Winston and check out their schools. I want my child to have every possible resource and opportunity to succeed but I do believe change will have to occur in order for that to happen. County students and teachers are no different than city students and teachers.

Take a 10-20 minute drive to Elkin and send your children there. 10-20 percentage points better when it comes to EOG performance when compared to Wilkes (over 70 percent of students scored level 3 or higher on EOGs last year compared to just about 53 percent in Wilkes according to the DPI). Recess everyday which is not allowed at many Wilkes schools, an award winning band, the first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS, and Math) driven system in the state, a regular schedule without the longer days which is draining on younger students, and a staff that will push your child to do better regardless of their level as opposed to ignoring them if they are on level. Only $300 a year tuition and a short drive, it will blow your mind how different and better it is.

Thats what made me not want to support the Education lottery in the first place and I'm a retired educator. I have relatives that live in South Carolina. They voted in the lottery several years before NC did. The same thing happened to them that is happening here now. When the lottery money comes in the legislators just cut back on what they fund and say heck lets just use what we have and thats it. What they should do is up the funding on education and apply the lottery money too. The reason it was called the education lottery was so the people of the state would vote to approve it. Most people are opposed to gambling but they will vote for it if they think it will help the children. The lottery is just another example that shows how politicians use education as one of their main platforms. Everybody wants good schools for their children. You can see how Hagan is trying to use education against Tillis. I got tired of seeing the Dems run in the elections and promise the people and the teachers the moon when it came to education in this state. Some special interest group worked hard to get the lottery past here. What astounded me was you could go to SC and their signs for the lottery looks just like ours. That lets me think that it is being run by the same people. If I'm not mistaken the state contracts this out to a group. They are the ones that getting helped by the lottery. They called it education just so the voters would agree to vote in legalized gambling.

Everyone knows the schools aren't getting extra funding from the lottery. The lotto money may certsiy go towards education funding, BUT they are also moving the money out of the education budgets to fund other things.

I heard on the news this morning that NC is on the very bottom in the nation concerning teacher pay and funding for schools.

Makes me wonder what the education lottery is for.
