One lane of U.S. 421 shut down due to accident today; one seriously injured
A Winston-Salem woman was seriously injured in a collision this morning on U.S. 421 East near the Berry's Lane overpass, according to Trooper B.S. Stokes of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Keschia Twanda Crockett, 43, driver of a 2000 Ford sport/utility vehicle, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem by Wilkes EMS. Stokes said she suffered very serious leg fractures.
Brendan William O'Conner, 20, of Kernersville, driver of a 2000 Honda, was traveling west when he attempted to pass Ms. Crockett, Stokes said. O'Conner hit the right side of Ms. Crockett's vehicle.
Ms. Crockett lost control of her vehicle, which went off on the right and overturned multiple times, coming to rest on its top on the shoulder of the highway the trooper said.
Ms. Crockett, trapped in the wreckage, was removed through one of the vehicle's windows by EMS personnel and Ronda and Roaring River first responders.
O'Conner was charged by Trooper A.R. McLean with driving while impaired, driving while impaired on a provisional license and failure to maintain lane control in the collision, which happened around 7:15 a.m.
Stokes noted that O'Conner was impaired by drugs.
One of the highway's eastbound lanes was closed while emergency personnel addressed the situation, but traffic continued to flow in the other lane, Stokes noted.
Stokes estimated damage to O'Conner's car at $2,500. Ms. Crockett's vehicle was destroyed.http://www.journalpatriot.c...b2370.html
