Lofland, the thing is, there's not been a single documented case of that actually happening.

Genseeker, I've always put my litter box on a small stand that's about 3' off the ground. The cats can jump up there to use it, but it's too high for kids or dogs to get to.

Mommotwo, the classified I was referring to specifically said that this was the reason they were getting rid of their cats. A 4 year old and a 5 year old cat that they said they loved, abandoned because of an old wives tale. It just made me sad.

Cats smell the milk on a baby's mouth and will sit on the baby's chest to lick it or smell it.
Thus the baby will not be able to breath depending on how big the cat is and how small the baby is.
So cats can take a baby's breath away, in a sense.

I've had cats with babies and understand the litter box concerns. Kids will put anything in their mouth. I had a simple solution, I used a baby gate to block off areas of the house that I felt were not safe for a toddler. This included the kitchen and bathroom. Litter box was in the bathroom so the kids had no access when the gate was up. And everyone should wash their hands after handling pet things like a litter box.

It's common sense people.

It's not the cat that is the problem, its the kitty litter and the toxins.

some people also have concerns about toxoplasmosis....I think is how you spell it and them getting into a kitty litter box during those crawling years, especially.....I have a friend whose daughter has a 5 year old and 5 weeks off from birthing a second daughter that puts the cat up on the table at breakfast time and they all consume their meals together......I'm not that close to my dogs so that aint gonna happen with me and the kitties either.

It also doesn't mean that a parent that chooses to keep a cat with a baby is a bad parent. It's all a matter of personal choice and they shouldn't be shamed either way.
