I can now say I have been. The festival part was OK, but the BBQ was nothing to write home about. And I second the shadow knows opinion of BBQ.

nomad8 | Posted 3:16 pm, 10/25/2014 | The shadow knows nothing about BBQ if he/she prefers the vinegar soaked slop they serve down east over the fare at Lexington # 1. We trek the 70 miles down to eat at "Honey Monk's" Lexington #1 {the white building beside business I-85) at least once every month. I always order the chopped tray and request outside brown to get the some of the charred meat closest to the hickory smoke. I also ask for some of the "dip"- the sauce they baste the meat in as they cook it, and use it instead of the other sauces on the table. They also have excellent cobbler. The Lexington style cooks only pork shoulders, and this beat the whole hog from down east. I do admit to stopping by Wilbur's anytime I pass through Goldsboro for some of his great Brunswick stew and even lower my standards to take a little BBQ on the side. |
The slop they serve in Lexington has way too much tomato paste in the sauce. I like the vinegar and pepper sauces of Eastern NC.
Now if you wanna talk beef, we will talk about Texas smoked brisket. The places I go out there serve the meat with a wonderful sauce, so good that ya wants to slap yer mama

Wiki stated that all the sauces are vinegar based, but, some do offer sauces that have no/little vinegar. Or least that's what I found when I was there. Personally, I like the vinegar based sauces.

I have been to the festival in years past. It's a good way to sample different kinds of BBQ/sauces. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bbq center on main street was great place to eat, but not been there since I lived in Greensboro. Stameys bbq on Battleground in greensboro is great too.

That stuff the cook in Lexington an insult to the word BBQ. If you want real pork BBQ, go to Parker's or Wilbur's
