If you use your IPad, laptop,Pc, etc @ the same location it is the same IP address. Cell phone will vary. Until 4 years ago Jason had never been out of Wilkes county.lol

What does the term unique visitor mean?

I'm specifically referring to it as Google Analytics does. When you visit a site the first time, it stores a "cookie" on your computer, which is a small text file with a unique number in it. Each subsequent visit, the system checks to see if that cookie exists. If not, then you're considered to be a "unique visitor".

It's not perfect, of course. If two people access the site through the same computer, they'll be listed as 1 visitor, not two. So public access points (like the library and WCC) skew the results.

But at the same time, if you visit with your desktop, tablet, and cell phone, then you'll be listed as 3 visitors.

Worse, most hackers / scammers / spammers / viruses set their browser to not store cookies at all, so each pageview is considered a different user. We block most non-US IP addresses through the firewall, so this doesn't affect us so much, but I'm sure that it would affect Facebook's numbers.

Because of this discrepancy, we usually don't talk much about "unique visitors". The statistic that we use is "pageviews"; meaning, each time a page is shown it's counted as 1 pageview. This is a more accurate way to compare yourself to other websites.

I wonder why it is the other Go NC sites are not as active as Go Wilkes ? I'm just saying for a site to have many unique visitors that would mean the classifieds are getting more activity than community voice but I don't know.

There are several speculative reasons, really:

1. Keep in mind that you have to consider a county's population in relation to the number of visitors. Adjusted for population, GoAshe and GoAlleghany actually have more visitors than GoWilkes! But since their population is considerably smaller, you see lower actual numbers.

2. GoWilkes is considerably older than the other sites, so it's had more time to grow. GoWilkes began 3 years before Facebook, 2 years before MySpace, and 1 year before Friendster! Unlike Facebook, though, we didn't a multi-million dollar investor

Surry is a little behind where GoWilkes was at the same age, but not much. The odd thing is that the Classifieds in Surry are very active, where the Community Voice is less so. Wilkes was the other way around.

3. A lot of people from surrounding counties already had the habit of visiting GoWilkes, so they never felt all that obligated to post on GoSurry, GoYadkin, etc.

4. Marketing in Wilkes is surprisingly easy and affordable as compared to surrounding counties, so we were able to get the word out about GoWilkes pretty easily. Finding a billboard in a good location in Ashe, Watauga, Alleghany, Sparta, or Yadkin, though, is next to impossible!

We did run a single billboard in Iredell for awhile, but it was double the price of a billboard in Wilkes, and in a terrible location. A good location was almost 10 times what we were paying in Wilkes!

5. This is the big one, I think. Marketing 60 takes a lot of manpower! We have a goal of utilizing 40 employees across the state, which is what I think it will take to effectively manage all of the sites. But we've had an almost impossible time trying to find employees across the state that can both do the job and be trusted to work without direct oversight.

So instead, it's pretty much all fallen on me. I can't be everywhere at once, though, so I'm forced to spend a year or two working on one site, then the next year on the next, and so on. I was able to spend several years building GoWilkes on a daily basis, but I've only really been actively promoting GoSurry for the last few months.

The main take away, though, is that they're all growing steadily, it just takes time. The more time I can spend promoting a site, though, the less time it takes to see results.

You're probably right farmer, people looking for jobs too. And the recipe section might be far busier than most imagine. But I would guess the classifieds are the most active

And yeah, you are pretty close in that population number

Upon your first visit to this site, you would be considered unique via your IP address. If you come back 100 times..you are only unique once

Jason's numbers indicate that 120K different iPs have come here at least once during a week and that most were from Wilkes. I don't know for sure but I would think my laptop and my iPad register different IP addresses.

I think we need a geek to give a better answer.

Thanks, Elmo. I guess I'm just not understanding. I'm thinking the population is 68 or 69,000 in Wilkes but I'm probably wrong.

Glitter I think it's unique ip addresses, but I am not a geek so don't know for sure

When I saw that number for Wolkes, I assumed people are using iPads, cell phones, and computers to be here but at the same location. I might be wrong though

120K is more than Wilkes County's population

Social Media is responsible for many of society's ills today. If the wacko in Virgina didn't have social media to air his terrible deeds on, would the two news reporters be alive today?

His motives wasn't due to social media. There were personal and interpersonal issues swirling in that twisted mind of his. Now, no one would have viewed his video if it weren't for Twitter and Facebook. But, the reporter and cameraman still would have been shot.

Unfortunately, that's an almost impossible statistic to guess. How many people have a cell phone, but no home internet? How many only use the internet at work? How many access from public locations, like the library or college?

I can tell you, though, that GoWilkes still has more than 120,000 unique visitors each week, which is almost entirely from Wilkes. And GoSurry has a little over 11,000 unique visitors each week.

of that 10K of registered users, do you know how many internet users there are in the county? or what the percentage of the county population use the net?

GoWilkes

FWIW, I've used Facebook for advertising all across North Carolina. Based on my results, about 1% of the state's population logs in more than once a week. Roughly 10% logs in more than once a month.

According to their Ad Manager, an ad that specifically targets Wilkes county will potentially reach approximately 10,000 registered users. An ad that specifically targets Surry county will potentially reach 4,500 registered users. Those numbers are similar to the results that I saw.
