Also I've heard good things about people being able to use Wine and install Microsoft Office just fine. Might be worth a shot if you really need Office.

I hope there product "Kingsoft" is better than there writing...

Spreetsheets: Add chart support(readonly currently)

Spreetsheets: Add txt, csv and prn file format multi text encoding support

Spreetsheets: Add xml file format support

Spreetsheets: Add xlsx's file crypt support

wth is Spreetsheets... On to another note, you mention wp. I take it that you're referring to word processor? This is different than office word and it will be harder to get a program that's compatible with older word processor formats. Personally I love using Libre office and have never had an issue with it. Honeslty, LibreOffice is now being the default productivity suite for many Linux distributions.

Chris, I have not tried BlackHat Linux. I will give it a try. Thanks.

PDFs will open easily in Linux, if they require a program, you will be given an option to download a compatible application from the software center.

As for powerpoint and word documents, http://www.kingsoftstore.co....html ; KingSoft Office is a great free word document process, excel, and PowerPoint suite. I recommend it to all of my customers and I have never heard a single complaint. It has the option to look just like MS Office 2007 and it is completely compatible with Word documents.

I would stay away from OpenOffice, LibreOffice, and AbiWord. They are all buggy and slow to open.

I've not tried Mageia. I've heard good things about it too, but personally have never tried it as I like to stick with one that I know works and not have to reformat or burn to disk everytime I want to try another distro. Have you ever tried Blackhat? I love using it for pen testing. Used to use it back in the day for WEP password cracking. Still use it now as well as I love all the tools it provides.

Thanks Tek and Chris. I have an older system - Pent 4, 1024mb ram, 80gb hdd. I would eventually like to transfer my wp, spreadsheets and pdf files into something that could be run on linux. Do you know if this can be done? I don't want to try a dual boot until I get use to Linux. I have never tried to use any Linux software before, I just taking baby steps:) Thanks again.

One other thing, http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

UNetbootin is a life saver. Use it to create a live USB flash drive that has a persistent partition(or section/space) that the OS saves all your data to. If you install something while booted live, it will be saved in that partition. This is helpful to keep the system up-to-date and secure and also saves your wireless information so you do not have to setup over and over again.

Thanks again and good luck,

Puppy Linux is great when you run it live, although it can be a hassle to install on a hard drive. DSL (**** small linux) is another lightweight distribution that runs great on low resource computers.

Peppermint OS is a nice one to install that will come with everything installed to get you started without any trouble and runs well on a low resource computer.

Also, take a look at http://www.linuxalt.com/ this will help you find some useful apps that are alternatives to ones used in Windows OS.

Glad to see someone embarking on the Linux journey to open source.

Check this link out. It pretty much answers your questions. Puppy's not for me as I like my full operating system that I get from Linux Mint.

I am moving to Linux. Thinking of trying out Puppy first. Is anyone using it? If so what are the pros & cons? I though I would start with Live CD Puppy and move on from there--what do you think? I'm going to learn this OSs if it kills me. I'm not moving on to Win 8 from XP. Reading about Linux is very interesting
