Computer Problem

Try Linux. I download Puppy Slacko and running it from a CD live. I like it. I going to try some more. I refuse to go beyond Win XP. I'm looking for alternatives. Also some Linux software work with older machines. I think I hooked on Linux and I don't know that much about computers. Never used anything but DOS/Win and now I am changing because I don't like Win 8 and it probably wouldn't work with my old hardware. Good Luck

".My computer is old, about 12 years old. And Windows XP has stopped updating"....microsoft ended support/updates for xp in april 2014,
bite the bullet buy a new windows 7 pc for $350-$400(or an off lease one for ****225) before you are stuck with windows 8.
or screw around and throw a couple hundred $ at the old one and still have a dinosaur

Hello Good Soul.

I just dropped by this post here to let you know if you are considering or have considered upgrading your Windows XP Machine. I have a Windows XP ER Recovery Promo going on I will be loading to Gowilkes Classifieds under Services tomorrow.

It would be foolish for me not to mention it. In the event you are on a tight budget you might consider installing Linux. I would discuss that with Chris87 if you feel more comfortable with him. I get the feeling he has serviced your machines before. I may be wrong; however. If he has and your happy I see no reason to look elsewhere.

As Chris will tell you in many cases upgrading a Windows XP PC to Windows 7 is not feasible or capable without a costly video card upgrade . In some cases however this is a great opportunity to breath new life into an old machine. Take care.

I highly doubt that's going to happen.

Stay positive!

What you will do is take out 2 screws on the back of the computer. I'm guessing this is a desktop? Most desktops but not all have 2 screws on the back of the computer that hold the side panel in. Actually there's 4 screws, but you're only going to need to take out 2. If you're looking at the front of the computer, it will be the panel on the left side of the case that needs to come off. You can buy cans of air at walmart for around $5/can. Clean it out really good, and see if it benefits.

Thanks for the info.....Where would I find this can of compressed air? I keep the back fan clean, but have never went inside the box. The was It's clicking it sounds like the hard drive is going out. Just my opinion. I hope to get a new HP soon. So what I do is take the front of the box off and blow it out with the can of air? I'll try it. I'll probably tear the it up completely. lol

Clicking sounds are either dust buildup in the fans, or the hard drive is going bad in the computer. First thing to try is to get a can of compressed air and really clean the inside of the computer. If that doesn't resolve the issue, then it sounds like your hard drive is about to quit and would need replacing ASAP. You can still replace the hard drive and put a linux distro on that computer and still get several years out of it if you're wanting to save some money.

Help......My computer is old, about 12 years old. And Windows XP has stopped updating. Now I have another problem. It's making a clicking sound. It doesn't do it all the time just sometimes. What would be making it do that? It sounds like it's going to stop running. Whats up with that? Any ideas? I know I need a new one, and I'm working on getting one, because this one doesn't have enough RAM to take Windows 7! Any help would be appreciated!
