OLD WILKES WALKING TOUR

Leisurely walk through historic Wilkesboro, visit 13 buildings on the National Register The Tory Oak of Historic Places, and hear the colorful tales of Wilkes County's history. Wilkesboro is the county seat of Wilkes County. For two centuries it has been the center of civic life for people living between the Brushy Mountains on the southeast and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. Today, while retaining some of its 18th and 19th century flavor, the town has also enjoyed the development on its fringes of such industries as poultry, dairy products, shoes, textiles, gloves, and banking. A regional shopping center, community college, and a new civic center bring the town up-to-date.

There is no charge for the walking tour (donations are appreciated) and it is by appointment only. Contact Joan Baity at Old Wilkes, Inc. (336) 667-3712. Take their online Virtual Tour at:
