Cowboys & Aliens is a hoot. But it's not a spoof.
Director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and a platoon of writers have delivered a classic western, complete with stamping hooves, six-gun shooters, prairie vistas, painted Indians and cattle ranches. There's even a character called Doc (all Westerns must have a character called Doc: It's the law).
The one big difference is, of course, aliens. John Wayne never had to deal with Creature-from-the-Black-Lagoon types who zip about in flying machines.
Aliens, as it turns out, fit quite nicely into a western, or at least this one. Give major credit to Favreau both for managing to wrangle a credited nine writers into such a smooth flowing script, and then for blending two genres that at first seem opposites (modern vs. historic) but which ultimately turn out to have a lot in common.
The movie begins with Jake Loner-gan (Daniel Craig, sporting an Eastwood squint), waking up in the middle of nowhere. He's got a wound in his side, no shoes and no idea who he is or how he got there. A strange bracelet is strapped to his wrist.
Lonergan makes his way to a dusty, failed mining town that pretty much exists only to service a grizzled cattle rancher named Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford) and his spoiled son (Paul Dano).
The local sheriff (Keith Carradine) quickly recognizes Jake as a wanted thief and murderer and tosses him in the hoosegow, although he only manages to subdue Jake with the help of a mysterious purty lil' gal named Ella (Olivia Wilde).
Jake is just about to be shipped off to a penitentiary when strange lights appear in the sky. Yep, it's your classic alien attack.
Suddenly, laser beams are blowing buildings up and metallic lassos are coming down from assorted flying machines and scooping people up.
Bullets prove useless, but the strange bracelet on Jake's wrist lights up and turns out to be a weapon. He blasts one of the ships out of the sky and it crashes down on the town's main street.
Its pilot gets away, but not without getting shot.
Time to round up a posse and go after the bad guy from outer space.
At which point Cowboys & Aliens becomes a chase movie, even though the posse has no idea what it's chasing. And Jake becomes a crucial member, since he has the magic bracelet.
Those looking for action will not be disappointed, since the film is pretty much a full-gallop affair. By the end, Favreau has blended both Indians and outlaws into the mix, putting all requisite Western types to good use.
This is the best role Ford has had in years, but in truth the film belongs to Craig and Ms. Wilde, whose otherworldly beauty fits her role perfectly. It's hard to imagine her playing an average housewife (or an average anything); but between this and Tron:Legacy, where she was the only thing worth watching, Wilde has broken into features in a big way. Angelina, watch your back.
Still, despite all the talent here — Sam Rockwell plays a saloon keeper, Adam Beach is Dolarhyde's right-hand man and Walton Goggins steals every scene as a nervous outlaw — Cowboys & Aliens isn't exactly an actors showcase.
Nope, it's just big silly fun, the kind you're supposed to have at a summer movie with a ridiculous title.
Following is the official preview for Cowboys & Aliens.

It was not what I expected! It couldn't keep me interested I played games on my iPod thru most of the movie
This movie was much better than anticipated. Very well written, and the main character plays his part well. During the movie, I was thinking that the aliens were going to be cheap, but again, I was very happy to be proven wrong once more. A must see. 5 out of 5 stars.
This Movie was AWESOME. Loved every second of it. If you haven't seen it yet, you have to go to wal-mart and buy it or watch it online. So worth the money to have watched it in the movies. Not dissapointed at all. Great GREAT Movie!! It is a Must Watch.
Other than getting to see some nice horses in the movie, it was far fetched and meaningless. I wouldnt recomend to anybody I liked.
Great Alien movie. I really dont see why everyone thought it was funny, or a "goofball" movie. it wasnt meant to be a "comedy".
